HC Deb 10 November 1942 vol 383 c2300W
Mr. Martin

asked the Secretary of State for War for what reason T/Lance-Corporal W. Gorbell, T/274040, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, was sent overseas at such short notice that he had no opportunity of communicating with his wife before leaving camp for the port of embarkation?

Sir J. Grigg

Save in exceptional circumstances, soldiers are given a period of leave before they are sent overseas. In the case referred to by my hon. Friend it was considered to be in the man's own interest to be sent overseas without being given embarkation leave but I regret that he had no opportunity to communicate with his wife before he left.
