HC Deb 18 March 1942 vol 378 cc1525-6W
Commander Locker-Lampson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether the wholemeal bread, now made compulsory upon all purchasers and consumers, contains the 95 per cent. wholemeal of the loaf made in the last war?

Major Lloyd George

My hon. Friend is under a misapprehension in assuming that bread was at any time during the last war made exclusively from flour of 95 per cent. extraction. When the change recently announced becomes fully effective the national loaf will be of 85 per cent. extraction, which is somewhat less than the maximum rate of extraction reached in the great war.
