HC Deb 18 March 1942 vol 378 c1534W
Major Kimball

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he will consider increasing the speed limit above 20 miles per hour for heavy commercial vehicles during daylight hours, in order to allow journeys to be completed in a shorter time, with a resultant decrease in the hours of blackout driving and in the numbers of commercial vehicles on the roads during black-out hours?

Mr. Noel-Baker

I regret that I cannot adopt my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion. Since the war, the maximum weight of vehicles permitted to exceed a speed of 20 miles an hour has been raised from 2½ to 3 tons weight unladen, and, on grounds of public safety on the roads, and of wear and tear of the highways, and of economy of tyres and fuel, no further concession would be justified.
