HC Deb 30 July 1942 vol 382 c723W
Sir W. Davison

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that men volunteering for enlistment in the Army do not receive a grade card after their medical examination, as is the case with conscripts; and whether this anomaly will be discontinued, as if volunteers are not accepted by reason of the fact that they are not of a high medical category, they naturally require a document of some kind such as a grade card to show to anyone who inquires why they are not in the Army?

Mr. Sandys

Volunteers usually apply for entry into some specific branch of the Army. The fact that they do not possess the necessary qualifications or come up to the medical standard required for the particular corps of their choice does not necessarily imply that they are unfit for all forms of military service.
