HC Deb 30 July 1942 vol 382 c710W
Sir A. Knox

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider whether the men and machinery now employed, often without supervision, in the demolition of damaged buildings in London and else where could be employed on more useful war work?

Mr. H. Morrison

Arrangements have been in operation for some time for the release for other important war work of a considerable proportion of the men and machinery employed on demolition work in London and elsewhere, and I am in constant consultation with my right hon. Friends the Ministers of Labour and Works to enure that this labour force is utilised to the best advantage. I do not accept the suggestion that demolition work for safety reasons and salvage is of minor importance or that it is conducted without supervision.
