HC Deb 30 July 1942 vol 382 cc720-1W
Captain A. Graham

asked the President of the Board of Education what steps he is now taking to ensure that all school children in future are adequately instructed in the geography and history of the British Empire?

Mr. Butler

Teaching of the geography and history of the British Empire is generally included in school syllabuses in accordance with the Board's "Handbook of Suggestions for Teachers." A book on the British Commonwealth of Nations specially designed for the use of teachers is in course of preparation. My Department is organising a course for teachers on the English-speaking peoples which will include the Dominions and British Colonies. In addition the approved examining bodies are, I understand, considering how they can best promote the study of the British Empire through the certificate examination.
