HC Deb 28 July 1942 vol 382 c353W
Squadron-Leader Donner

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he will suspend the 30-mile-per-hour limit in built-up areas for all except heavy vehicles, in view of the great diminution of traffic, thereby no longer forcing motorists to travel long distances at speeds below the most economical rate?

Mr. Noel-Baker

No, Sir. Apart from considerations of safety on the roads, restriction of driving speeds is more than ever necessary to economise in the wear and tear of tyres and in the consumption of fuel.
