§ Mr. J. Dugdaleasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the hardship caused by the operation of Section 123 of, and the Eighth Schedule to, the Local Government Act, 1929, whereby, under paragraph 14, certain persons taking up employment under a local authority with the object of furthering the war effort are bound to work without any payment whatever for their services; and whether he will consider what action can be taken to remove such hardship?
§ Mr. E. BrownI am aware of the statutory provisions referred to which relate to compensation for loss of office, but they do not have the effect mentioned in the Question. Remuneration payable for the new employment would not operate to reduce the amount of compensation unless the two together exceeded the remuneration for which compensation was granted. I am not satisfied that any hardship is involved which calls for amending legislation.
