HC Deb 23 July 1942 vol 382 c199W
Mr. Lindsay

asked the President of the Board of Education how many local education authorities have notified him that boys were unable to join pre-service units and other organisations or to take advantage of evening classes owing to excessive hours of work?

Mr. Butler

In the case of over 40 areas the information received by my Department contained references to long hours worked by boys, and in a few of these cases it was suggested that long working hours precluded participation in evening classes, or other Youth Service activities. I have sent my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour and National Service all information in my possession for examination, together with any information given by local education authorities to H.M. Factory Inspectors and local Employment Exchanges in accordance with the arrangement set out in Administrative Memorandum No. 371, a copy of which I am sending the hon. Member.
