HC Deb 21 January 1942 vol 377 cc370-1W
Mr. Lipson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies why the censorship in Palestine refused to allow the publication in the Jewish papers in Palestine of descriptions of parades, meetings and rallies held in Palestine to induce Jews to volunteer for service in the Armed Forces; and, as this prohibition was injurious to the success of the recruiting campaign, will he now have it withdrawn?

Mr. George Hall

My Noble Friend has asked the High Commissioner to furnish a report on this matter, but I regret that this report is not yet available.

Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been drawn to the way in which the British censorship in Palestine is exercised; whether he is aware that nearly three-quarters of an article by Dr. Norman Maclean in the "Palestine Post", written to celebrate the Jewish Feast of Lights and Christmas Day, was deleted because it was pointed out that the Jews had given the world a universal religion and contributed to the foundations of Christianity; and on what principles this censorship is allowed to act?

Mr. Hall

My Noble Friend's attention has been drawn to this matter, and he is making inquiry of the High Commissioner for Palestine.
