HC Deb 04 February 1942 vol 377 c1204W
Sir L. Lyle

asked the Minister of Labour whether, with the object of avoiding waste of effective man-power, he will consider exempting from being called up for military service, for munitions or for any other similar employment, those men over 40 years of age who have served, or are serving, in the Home Guard, and who can be regarded as thoroughly efficient?

Mr. Tomlinson

No, Sir. It is not possible to exempt a man from his liability to whole-time service in the Armed Forces or otherwise because of his part-time service in the Home Guard. Each case must be considered on its merits but I can assure my hon. Friend tint the nature of the service which a man is giving in the Home Guard is one of the factors that will be taken fully and sympathetically into account.
