HC Deb 06 August 1942 vol 382 c1228W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport why towels will no longer be supplied on trains except in sleeping cars; and how many towels have been taken from trains during the past 12 months?

Mr. Noel-Baker

This measure was required because so many towels were stolen by passengers from the trains. The risk of loss from sleeping cars, however, is negligible and towels are, therefore, still supplied. I am unfortunately unable to give my hon. Friend an estimate of the total number stolen during the last 12 months, but the losses at present average about 28,000 a week.
