§ Colonel Carverasked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the official appeal to the public to salvage bones, he is aware that many local authorities make no attempt to collect them; and whether he can state and name the list of such authorities so as to stimulate them in this respect?
§ Mr. PeatI have been asked to reply. All local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales with a population of over 10,000 and boroughs with a population of over 5,000 are under direction to provide a service for the collection of household bones; many of the other smaller local authorities also collect household bones. A special request was made recently to all local authorities to intensify their bone collection; I hope that as a result of this, and of the special appeals to the public, the quantities collected will increase materially. The records of the Salvage Department of the Ministry of Supply for the past three months show that 91 of the local authorities under direction made either nil or negligible returns for bones. A list of these authorities is appended. Special inquiry is being made into these cases, and my right hon. Friend proposes to prosecute where the circumstances indicate unjustifiable non-compliance with the Direction referred to.
