HC Deb 06 August 1942 vol 382 cc1202-3W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is aware that hundreds of tons of fish landings, fit for human consumption, at the port of Aberdeen, have been, and are being, sold for manure at the fish market; whether this is due to a shortage of labour at the market; and whether any action is being taken to increase the supply of labour and improve the marketing facilities in order to stop the present waste?

Mr. Mabane

The landings of fish at Aberdeen, which have recently been considerably above the average, have included fish which has not been sizeable or of good quality. The quantity sent to the fish meal factories during the last five weeks was 3.6 per cent. of the total landing, and has consisted, I am informed, chiefly of fish which was bad on arrival and could not be saved by processing. The labour position at Aberdeen and other ports is under special review at the present time.
