HC Deb 05 August 1942 vol 382 c1056W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether he will issue the necessary orders to permit members of the Royal Air Force to wear shoes on their days and afternoons off and while on leave?

Captain Balfour

Boots are the standard Service footwear issued to airmen. They are of a relatively light type and it is not considered desirable or necessary to introduce a regulation permitting the wearing of shoes while off duty and not on extended leave. Airmen on leave exceeding 24 hours may wear plain clothes including shoes.
