HC Deb 09 September 1941 vol 374 c45W
Mr. Temple Morris

asked the Secretary for Mines how many collieries are still without canteens, and whether, as miners are still having inadequate food, he will stimulate, before the winter, the compulsory establishment of a canteen at every colliery of any size?

Mr. Grenfell

Out of approximately 1,100 pits employing more than 50 workers each, 255, or 23 per cent, have already started a canteen service and 411, or 37 per cent, are under negotiation, and should be in operation shortly. Provision will then have been made for 78 per cent, of the total number of men employed. Every effort is being made to expedite the establishment of colliery canteens where the miners desire them.
