§ Mr. Crowderasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, whether he will take steps to ensure that refugees from enemy-occupied countries working in industry in this country are subject to British Income Tax and share the burden of taxation equally with the people of this country?
§ Captain CrookshankThe provisions of the Income Tax Acts are applied in the ordinary course to refugees working in industry in this country. The returns of employees' wages made by employers to the Inland Revenue are required to include the wages of such persons and the scheme of deduction of Income Tax from wages is applied in their case as in the case of other employees.
§ Mr. Rhys Daviesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has now given further consideration to the inclusion in assessments for Income Tax purposes of payments made to members of the Observer Corps which they were led to believe were to be regarded as out-of-pocket expenses; and what decision has been reached?
§ Sir K. WoodI have considered this matter further, but I regret that I cannot vary the terms of the answer which I gave to my hon. Friend on 30th September last.
