HC Deb 02 April 1941 vol 370 cc1017-8W
Mr. R. Morgan

asked the Home Secretary what facilities his Department has offered for the development of an air-raid precautions service for animals throughout the country; and what grant has been made towards the upkeep of the organisation developed?

Mr. Mabane

In the summer of 1939 the National A.R P. for Animals Committee was called into being by the then Lord Privy Seal. This Committee, made up mainly of representatives of the animal welfare societies and the veterinary profession, undertook to develop and finance air raid precautions for animals in towns. My Department and other Departments were represented on the Committee. The Treasury made an initial grant of £1,000 and a further advance of £1,500 towards the purchase of equipment. Later the scope of the scheme was extended to deal with animals on farms. This side of the organisation is at present under review, and I am not at present in a position to make any statement about the financial arrangements.
