HC Deb 04 July 1940 vol 362 cc1020-1W
Mrs. Adamson

asked the President of the Board of Education what proposals he has received from the local education authority for Herefordshire relating to the employment in agriculture of children of school age; whether the action of the local authority in this matter has received his approval; and, if not, what steps he proposes to take to ensure that the education of these children is safeguarded?

Mr. Ramsbotham

The local education authority proposed that during the months from June to September boys of 12 and over and girls of 13 and over should be released from school for agricultural employment. On representations from the Board that such action was in direct contravention both of Section 18 of the Children and Young Persons Act, 1933, and of the School Attendance Bylaws, the authority withdrew the proposal.
