HC Deb 06 February 1940 vol 357 c51W
Mr. E. Smith

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware of the uncertainty that existed at the end of August and during the first few days of September, 1939, amongst men desirous of enrolling in the National Service companies, and amongst those who had to receive the names of the men, in regard to the place where the names should be sent on to; that, in some cases, the secretaries of ex-servicemen's organisations held up the names for a few days; and, in view of this, will he authorise the payment of the £5 bounty to all men who can make a reasonable explanation or who reported or attested up to about 12th September?

Sir V. Warrender

I regret that I cannot go beyond the answer given by the Secretary of State for War to a Question by the hon. Member for Burnley (Mr. Burke) on 31st October last. The governing date is 23rd August. If any of the men in question had on or before that date signed the enlistment form or notified their intention of joining but were prevented from attesting until later, the question of payment will be considered if particulars of the cases are submitted.
