HC Deb 06 February 1940 vol 357 cc53-4W
Mr. R. Morgan

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he has any information as to how many of the leading employers in the country, such as banks, public utility undertakings and insurance companies, are making good the difference between the military pay of their employéswho have joined the defence Services and their normal pay; what is the present approximate annual cost of making up the difference between their civil pay and that which they receive in the defence Forces of those civil servants who have joined the Services?

Captain Crookshank

It is known that many leading employers have adopted schemes for making up in whole or in part the difference between Service pay and normal remuneration, but no precise information is available as to the number of employers who are adopting this course.

With regard to the second part of the Question, I regret that it is not practicable without considerable expenditure of time and labour to estimate the exact financial effect of making up balance of civil pay to civil servants serving with the Forces. The payments in question are not separately accounted for.
