HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 363 c50W
Mr. White

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury why His Majesty's Customs stop work on the docks at 4 p.m. in war-time and are paid overtime after that hour?

Captain Crookshank

The payment of overtime to Customs officials employed at the docks is related to their total weekly attendance and not to a particular time of the day. Possibly the hon. Member has in mind the hours during which free attendance is given for the examination of dutiable goods; these are either 8 a.m. —4 p.m. or 9 a.m.—5 p.m., but in practice attendance outside these hours is given as required to meet the convenience of traders, subject to the usual charges.
