HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 c1975W
Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that wives of soldiers are having payment of their separation allowances withheld owing to the fact that they are unable to produce birth certificates, the cost of which they find difficult to meet; and whether he will take steps to remove this difficulty.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware of the hardship caused to wives of soldiers through having to pay 3s. 7d. for a birth certificate before they receive separation allowances; and if any reduction in the fee can be made when required for this purpose in any branch of the armed forces?

Captain Crookshank:

I have been asked to reply. I regret that I can only refer the hon. Member to the answer given by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to a question put by the hon. Member for Ogmore (Mr. E. J. Williams) on Friday, 29th September.
