HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 cc1984-5W
Mr. Granville

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware that considerable coast erosion is taking place at Walberswick, in Suffolk; and, in view of the inability of the local authorities to undertake extensive schemes of coast defence, whether he will arrange for an inspector of his Department to visit this area?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith:

I am advised that the coast erosion at Walberswick to which my hon. Friend refers has been arrested by the action of the East Suffolk Rivers Catchment Board in depositing on the south side of Southwold Harbour spoil dredged from the mouth of the River Blyth, and that the high-water mark is now substantially further seaward. In the circumstances I do not think it necessary to adopt my hon. Friend's suggestion.
