HC Deb 21 November 1939 vol 353 c1054W
Miss Ward

asked the Minister of Labour the comparative rises in the cost of living since the outbreak of war in this country and in France; and to what the difference is attributed?

Mr. E. Brown

At 1st November, the official cost-of-living index figure for the United Kingdom showed a rise of approximately 9 per cent. since the outbreak of the war. Corresponding figures for France are not available; so far as I am aware, statistics relating to the changes in the cost of living since the beginning of the war have not yet been officially published in that country.
