HC Deb 09 November 1939 vol 353 c446W
Mr. Burke

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that men who volunteer for the Armed Forces are being informed that substitutes at lower rates will be given their jobs permanently; and whether he will take steps to ensure that volunteers are treated in the matter of future re-employment not less favourably than men in the Militia?

Mr. E. Brown

I have no information to the effect stated in the first part of the question. As regards the second part, the existing law requires employers to reinstate all men who were called from their civil employment for service connected with the present emergency. Men who have volunteered since 1st September are, however, not given this protection, but I am sure that employers generally will desire to give re-employment in due course in all cases where this is practicable.
