§ Mr. Molsonasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether any addition to or deduction from the pay, allowances, or remuneration of civil servants will be made where they are required to leave their homes or are billeted elsewhere; if so, on what principles such modifications are to be made; and is it intended that the £1 1s. a week allowed for each civil servant will allow of proprietors of boarding-houses and hotels requisitioned for civil servants making a sufficient profit to pay rent, rates, and all personal expenses?
§ Captain CrookshankIn general, civil servants who are evacuated with their Departments and who are householders,2148W i.e., broadly speaking married officers, will not be required to contribute towards the cost of their billets during the first three months, after which the question will be reconsidered. Non-householders will, however, bear the cost themselves after the first two weeks, except in the case of lowly-paid officers in receipt of less than two guineas a week, who will make a contribution varying according to their weekly rates of pay.
The arrangement whereby certain civil servants are billeted on the usual terms in boarding houses and the like is by agreement with the proprietors thereof.
