HC Deb 02 November 1939 vol 352 c2117W
Mr. Denville

asked the Home Secretary (1) whether, in the case of rooms placed at the disposal of local authorities by householders for use as air-raid wardens' posts, he is aware that certain local authorities are of the opinion that the minimum figure to cover lighting, heating, cleaning, rental of telephone, rent of room, including use of furniture, would be 15s. per week; and whether he can, therefore, consider increasing the sum of 5s. fixed by his Department for this purpose;

(2) whether his Department has informed all local authorities that 5s. has been fixed as the charge for the use of a room in a private house for an air-raid warden's post; and whether the local authorities have expressed any opinion as to the adequacy or inadequacy of this sum?

Sir J. Anderson

No such instruction has been issued by my Department. In a few cases local authorities have been informed that the charge for heating and lighting a room should not exceed 5s. a week. I have not received any representations from local authorities, but if they are made I will certainly consider them.
