HC Deb 11 May 1939 vol 347 cc715-6W
Sir G. Fox

asked the Secretary of State for War (1) what progress has been made during the past year in making arrangements to ensure that the military forces at home stations are supplied with more home produce as opposed to imported foodstuffs;

(2) whether, in view of the recent increase in the establishments of the military forces at home stations and the proposals for introducing compulsory military training, he will now arrange to ensure that these forces are supplied as far as practicable with home produce, as opposed to imported foodstuffs?

Sir V. Warrender

The practice of the War Office is to purchase home-grown supplies in preference to imported foodstuffs, provided the quality is satisfactory and subject to considerations as to price. This practice will apply in respect of additional requirements. During the past year, there have been increased purchases for Army purposes of products from home-grown fruit and vegetables.
