asked the Secretary for Mines whether he will state the number of coal-cutting machines in use, the number of conveyors in use at the coal face, the total output of coal obtained by machines; and the percentage of the total output cut by machines in the mining industry in Great Britain in the year 1938?

During 1938, 7,729 coal-cutting machines were in use, and 134–957,553 tons of coal, representing 59 per cent. of the total output, were cut by machinery in Great Britain. The number of conveyors in use at the coalface was 5,623.
