HC Deb 02 March 1939 vol 344 c1489W
Mr. Perkins

asked the Secretary of State for Air how many unexplained accidents and forced landings have taken place in the Royal Air Force during the winter 1938 and 1939; and whether any of the machines involved were fitted with a device, other than heaters, for preventing ice formation in the carburettor?

Sir K. Wood

Investigations into certain fatal accidents which occurred last month are not yet completed, but apart from these there were six unexplained accidents or forced landings involving casualties during the period 1st November, 1938, to 30th January, 1939. The aircraft concerned were not fitted with any device, other than heaters, for preventing ice formation in the carburettor; but five of the accidents referred to occurred in circumstances in which ice formation is not considered to have been a factor.
