§ Mr. Parkerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total amount of public money given by direct or indirect subsidy to each industry for each year since 1924.
§ Sir J. SimonThe following table gives particulars of the direct subsidies paid to industry for each year from 1924 to 1938. As regards indirect subsidies I am afraid that no clear basis exists for determining what constitutes an indirect subsidy to any particular industry. There are many and varied forms of expenditure from public funds which might be regarded as of indirect assistance to industry. To obtain detailed information upon them, covering the period in question and relating to each industry, would involve an expenditure of time and money not justified by the result achieved.
