§ Mr. Gallacherasked the Secretary of State for War whether the hardship committees are empowered to consider applications from the owners of one-man businesses for a grant to enable them to employ an experienced man to keep their business running while they are serving under the Military Training Act and to advise in favour of such grants?

WarrenderThe Military Service (Special Allowances) Advisory Committee is empowered to consider such an application, and to recommend in favour of a grant in a suitable case, if it is satisfied that the person concerned requires such assistance in consequence of his service under the Military Training Act, 1939, and that without it serious hardship1130W would result. Any such recommendation will be subject to the conditions indicated in the White Paper (Cmd. 6043) recently issued on the subject.
