HC Deb 04 July 1939 vol 349 cc1125-6W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the steamers which sail between Glasgow, Lochranza, Pirnmill, Carradale and Campbeltown, will be discontinued at the end of September; and as there has been a continuous regular service between Glasgow and Campbeltown since 1826, and the 140 miles of mountainous roads which separate Campbeltown from Glasgow are, in winter, frequently impassable during periods of fog and snow, particularly the ascent and descent of the Rest and Be Thankful, he will take all possible steps to see that this steamer service which has always been the main link with Kintyre in winter time, is maintained?

Mr. Colville

I am informed that the Clyde and Campbeltown Shipping Company propose to discontinue their existing mail, passenger and cargo service at the end of September but to provide a cargo service in its place. I am consulting my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport about the position.
