HC Deb 04 July 1939 vol 349 c1126W
Mr. Leonard

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that at the recent Highland and agricultural show there were 16 exhibits of Wiltshire bacon and none of the Ayrshire type; and whether he will reconsider his attitude to the Scottish deputation who pressed upon him the desirability of a separate marketing scheme for Scotland so as to protect, among other features, the economic advantages of Scottish-cured bacon?

Mr. Colville

I am informed by the Pigs Marketing Board, by whom the exhibit referred to was arranged, that its purpose was to illustrate to Scottish producers the type of cure known as Wiltshire, 55 per cent. of Scottish bacon is already so cured.

As regards the last part of the question, a separate Scottish Scheme is not at present in contemplation and I have received no representations from Scottish pig and bacon producers in favour of such a proposal.
