§ Sir P. SassoonI have made inquiries and can find no evidence in support of the hon. Member's suggestion. The engagement and discharge of labour is the 1149W contractor's responsibility who adjusts the number of men to accord with the progress necessary on the various sections of the works.
The size of the work necessitates the contract being divided into groups in which labour is engaged separately for each group. Before discharging men from any group every effort is made to transfer them to other groups where their services are required.
