HC Deb 09 February 1939 vol 343 cc1148-9W
Mr. E. J. Williams

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he is aware of the periodical dismissal of men at the Bridgend Arsenal, and the employment of other persons to proceed with the same work; and whether he will make inquiries?

Sir P. Sassoon

I have made inquiries and can find no evidence in support of the hon. Member's suggestion. The engagement and discharge of labour is the contractor's responsibility who adjusts the number of men to accord with the progress necessary on the various sections of the works.

The size of the work necessitates the contract being divided into groups in which labour is engaged separately for each group. Before discharging men from any group every effort is made to transfer them to other groups where their services are required.
