HC Deb 14 December 1939 vol 355 cc1331-2W
Mr. Doland

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, with a view to ensuring increased production, he will make a statement in regard to the supply of seed potatoes that will be available in 1940 for planting by allotment and smallholders and owners of private gardens; and in what manner and price will these seed potatoes be available to these small purchasers?

Sir W. Womersley

My right hon. Friend, the Minister of Agriculture is in close touch with my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster with a view to ensuring that an adequate supply of seed potatoes will be available for planting in 1940 by allotment holders and others. In some cases, it is customary for members of allotment associations to buy seed potatoes through their society and so secure the benefits arising from bulk purchase; in other cases allotment holders purchase individually through the usual trade channels as do smallholders and occupiers of private gardens. Maximum prices to be paid to growers have been fixed by the Seed Potatoes (Maximum Prices) Order, 1939.
