HC Deb 18 April 1939 vol 346 c186W
Mr. Kirby

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he has considered the request from the Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wirral Districts Building and Allied Employers' Association that its members should be allowed to tender on all occasions for any building work being undertaken by his Department; and will he state the nature of his reply, having in mind the heavy degree of unemployment in Liverpool and district, and the fact that members of this association have much plant not in use?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

A reply has been sent that those members of the association who are already on the War Office list of contractors for building work should get into communication with the local military authorities, and that those members who are not already on the War Office list should apply to be placed on the list. It is the policy to invite local firms to tender for work in the district in all appropriate cases.
