HC Deb 06 April 1939 vol 345 cc3037-8W
Sir R. Young

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether all the candidates for the naval artificer vacancies in 1937 and 1938 were first interviewed by the professional officers appointed for recruiting purposes; what was the standard number of marks set; how many, respectively, obtained 30 per cent., 40 per cent., and 50 per cent.; and whether there were any accepted with less than 30 per cent. of marks?

Mr. Shakespeare

So far as possible, candidates for entry as Artificer are interviewed by the professional officers appointed for recruiting purposes, but it is not possible to undertake an interview in every instance.

The numbers of candidates who obtained 30 per cent., 40 per cent. and 50 per cent. were:

Year. 30 per cent. 40 per cent. 50 per cent.
1937 24 59 184
1938 42 43 171

No candidates have been accepted with less than 30 per cent. of marks in the actual test job, though some candidates have been accepted who obtained good marks for the test job but had their marks reduced below 30 per cent. by exceeding the time allowed.
