HC Deb 04 April 1939 vol 345 cc2630-1W
Mr. Pearson

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will state the number of occasions during the past year that Welsh local authorities have been refused loans for housing purposes by the Public Works Loan Board; and why such authorities are urged by the board to obtain the required loans in the open market?

Captain Wallace

Since 1st April, 1938, the Public Works Loan Board have refused one loan for housing purposes to a Welsh local authority. The consideration of two other applications has been postponed pending the receipt of further information. Local authorities are only urged by the board to obtain loans in the open market when loans out of the Local Loans Fund are considered undesirable.
