Mr. T. Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether he can state the number of persons, and age group, registered as unemployed at Normanton, Castleford, and Pontefract at the latest date available; and the comparable figures for 1936 and 1933?

Mr. E. Brown

pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 16th May, 1938; col. 30, Vol. 335), supplied the following statement:

The following table shows, for each age group for which particulars were obtained, the numbers of persons, aged 18 years and over, registered as unemployed at the Castleford, Normanton and Pontefract Employment Exchanges at 28th February, 1938, the latest date for which such figures are available:

Corresponding statistics for juveniles under 18 years of age are not available in respect of 28th February, but at i4th March, 1938, the numbers of unemployed juveniles on the registers of the above Exchanges, in each age group for which particulars were obtained, were as follow:

Similar analyses by age groups of persons aged 18 and over registered as unemployed were not compiled in February, 1936, or February, 1933, but figures for May, 1936, were given in reply to a question by the hon. Member on 22nd July, 1937.

The following table gives the only analysis by age compiled for 20th February, 1933:
