THE EARL OF MACCLESFIELDasked His Majesty's Government under what authority a 30 miles per hour speed limit was imposed by the Ministry of Transport on West Way, London, for a period of three months, in February, 1937.
THE EARL OF ERNEThis length of road, having provided on it "a system of street lighting furnished by means of lamps placed not more than 200 yards apart," would have been "deemed to be a road in a built-up area" under Section 1 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, 1934 (and as such have become subject to the 3o miles per hour limit, when that subsection was brought into operation on March 18, 1935*), had not the Minister on March 8, 1935, made an Order† under subsection (4) (b) of Section 1 of the Act directing that it should not be deemed to be a road in a built-up area.
On February 15, 1937‡ the Minister revoked so much of the earlier Order† as related to West Way and the road therefore reverted to the status of a length of road in a built-up area under Section 1 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, 1934, and became subject to the limit 316WA of 30 miles per hour laid down by that section.
