§ Mr. Lyonsasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education if he will give the number of schoolchildren medically examined in the city of Leicester at the most recent date; the number of medical examiners then employed; and the number of children then found to need medical treatment?
Mr. Lindsay:During the year ended 31st December, 1937, 11,820 school-children in the city of Leicester were examined at routine medical inspections, and 16,813 at special inspections. There were also 24,673 reinspections.
The number of children found at routine medical inspections to require treatment for defects other than defects of nutrition, uncleanliness and dental diseases, was 1,630. Information is not available to show the number of children found to require treatment at special inspections, but 11,205 defects requiring treatment were found.
On 31st December, 1937, nine medical officers (giving the equivalent of six whole-time officers) were employed by the local education authority in the work of medical inspection and treatment.
