HC Deb 04 July 1938 vol 338 c53W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary whether he can state the cause of the accident at Thorpe Bay, Southend, Essex, on Wednesday last, when a man was killed and another injured while working in a sewer; and whether the trench was properly timbered?

Sir S. Hoare

The accident was due to the collapse of a trench, the primary cause of which has not so far been ascertained and further investigation is being made. The evidence at the inquest indicated that the trench had been properly timbered and all usual precautions taken.
