During 1935 the number of persons sentenced to penal servitude or imprisonment for indictable offences was 13,488 and the number sentenced to imprisonment for non-indictable offences akin to indictable offences was 4,250. The corresponding figures for 1936 are 13,327554W and 3,916. Since Borstal Institutions were started in 1908 there have passed through these institutions 14,000 persons. The available statistics do not show how many of these persons were sent to prison in the years mentioned, but of 2,536 persons discharged from Borstal Institutions in 1934, 1935 and 1936 the number subsequently sentenced to imprisonment is 714.
