HC Deb 21 December 1938 vol 342 c2927W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Transport what progress has now been made with the Benbecula ford bridge; how many men will be employed; whether local men are being employed; and to what proportion of the total number working on the scheme?

Mr. Burgin

I understand that the contractors will be on the site this week making preliminary arrangements for labour and materials. They hope to send the first consignment of plant and supervisory staff to the island early in January. The conditions of contract require the contractors to take 90 per cent. of the labour from local Employment Exchanges. It is not yet possible to say how many men will be required.
