HC Deb 14 December 1938 vol 342 cc2011-2W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Transport what are the reasons for the delay in proceeding with the scheme for a new bridge and road diversion between Tumble and Pontyberem in the county of Carmarthen; and if he will expedite the approval of this scheme in view of its urgency and the unemployment now prevailing in the area?

Mr. Burgin

The scheme was approved and a grant promised by my Department on the 23rd February, 1937. I understand that the Council were unable to proceed with the work owing to the difficulty of acquiring land for the purpose. It became necessary for them to make a Compulsory Purchase Order and parties named in the Order exercised their right of objection. The objection was only withdrawn on 23rd November last and I confirmed the Order on 8th December.
