HC Deb 14 April 1938 vol 334 c1332W
Mr. Daggar

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that in cases where an unemployed man, in addition to receiving standard benefit, applies to the Unemployment Assistance Board for an allowance, for which he produced a medical note, for nourishment for his child he is subjected to a reduction in the allowance because of the recent increase in dependant's benefit; and whether he is prepared to suggest to the Board that such a reduction is not in accordance with the sympathetic administration of the regulations announced by his Department?

Mr. E. Brown

The position in these cases is that a need previously met by an allowance from the Board is now met in part by the increase in the rate of insurance benefit. In taking account of the change of circumstances in such cases, the Board are acting in accordance with their statutory duties. Such action is in no way inconsistent with the continuance of a sympathetic administration.
