HC Deb 12 April 1938 vol 334 c950W
Mr. White

asked the Home Secretary whether he will state the average length of service of constables promoted to sergeants and of sergeants promoted to inspectors in the Metropolitan Police Force; and the amount of any allowance given to constables who pass the qualifying examination for promotion to sergeants between the time of passing such examination and the time of actual promotion?

Sir S. Hoare

In the Metropolitan Police Force, the average length of service until promotion to section sergeant or second class C.I.D. sergeant is nine years; until appointment to station sergeant or first class C.I.D. sergeant is 13 years 3 months; and until promotion to inspector (uniform branch) or second class C.I.D. inspector is 15 years 3 months. The police regulations do not authorise the payment of any special allowance to constables who have passed the qualifying examination for promotion, but such constables become eligible for two special increments in the scale of pay under conditions as to efficiency and good conduct laid down in Regulations 53 to 57.
