HC Deb 19 November 1937 vol 329 c737W
Mr. T. Williams

asked the Secretary for Mines how many persons were killed in the mining industry during the last 10 full years and the total sum paid in compensation to dependants?

Captain Crookshank

During the period 1927 to 1936, 9,490 persons were killed at mines under the Coal Mines Act, and 155 persons at mines under the Metalliferous Mines Regulation Acts. The Home Office compensation statistics relating to compensation actually paid during this period irrespective of the date of the accident, show that the total amount of compensation paid in respect of fatal accident cases in mines was £3,127,901, which includes a provisional figure for 1936.
